The Braided Rug - An American Tradition For 300 Years ... and Counting

..."A rug is much more than just a cover for your floor. It invites you to come in, relax, and be comfortable in someone's home. A statement not to be taken lightly."

The ancient Romans were the first to braid strands together to create stronger, more durable ropes of fabric. Then about 300 years ago, early American pioneers began braiding together scraps of cloth and stitching them together to create large rugs that could be produced at home. An American tradition was born.

These early settlers lived off the land, and couldn't afford fancy rugs from Europe. Inspired by Native American weaving designs, they recycled scraps of wool, cotton, and burlap from old blankets, clothing, and other fabrics. They braided these scraps together by insterting each new pattern into the braid one at a time, then stitching the braides together in concentric rings and ovals. The many different types of cloth used in each rug created the signature color patterns of braided rugs that we recognize today. Over the years, the craft was handed down from generation to generation and remains as one of the few truly American decor traditions.

Employing both modern scientific and mathematical principles, along with old world hand made craftsmanship, our rectangle patterns, SuperNova designs, and Out-Durable brand of braided rugs have revolutionized an industry.
